For over 100 years, Bellingham's waterfront served the city as a bustling economic and industrial region. Home to Georgia-Pacific for over forty years, the area began to lose some of its vitality with the ever-changing local and national economies. In 1999, GP began to stop its operations of pulp and paper production. Following shortly in 2003 was a partnership between the Port of Bellingham and the city to create a vision for the abandoned waterfront. A master design plan for the entire 11 miles of waterfront was set into motion.

The new waterfront district will be in close proximity to Bellingham's downtown core, with the Whatcom Museum of History & Art, the Children's Museum, and the historic Mount Baker Theatre only a short walk away. Bellingham will have its own cultural center with the implementation of this new plan.
The plan will offer a unique urban lifestyle which will incorporate fine and casual dining, a state-of-the-art marina which will house a large visitor's dock, boutique shopping, with miles of waterfront hiking trails, providing easy access to kayak beaches with quick launches into some of the world's finest paddling waters, and waterfront parks.
In addition to the many industrial innovations planned for this new community, there will also be a neighborhood built in harmony with the sophisticated nature of the waterfront, where residents will be able to walk to the local fish and crab markets, see an art exhibit, and have a delightful cup of java while perusing the many boats docked at the marina.
