You have already learned a little of the origins and advantages of Veteran's Administration home loans. But just who are VA loans for and what are the requirements?
You may already know that the VA Loan Guaranty Program exists to help veterans and active-duty service members to buy and enjoy homes in honor of their dedicated service to the United States. Additionally, the National Guard and Military Reserves are eligible to apply for VA home loans as well. However, did you know that other individuals may also be awarded eligibility? For example, if you are a US citizen who served in the Armed Forces of countries allied with the United States during World War II, you are eligible to apply for a VA home loan. The Veteran's Administration also recognizes members of various organizations such as public health officers, cadets of the US Military Academies (including the Coast Guard Academy), and merchant seamen with World War II service; these service members and others are also qualified to apply.
Active-duty veterans and current service members must have served a minimum of 90 days in wartime or a minimum of 181 consecutive days during peacetime. If the member was discharged, he or she must have been so in other than dishonorable circumstances. The discharge must have been at least general, or honorable at best. Should the member have been discharged dishonorably or under any other conditions, the VA is authorized to fully investigate and determine if the member did indeed serve the county meritoriously. A waiver may be issued if the number of days served is not the minimum required for eligibility, if a discharge was granted due to a service-related disability. Unmarried spouses of veterans who died while in service or from a service-related disability may be eligible for VA home loans. Additionally, spouses of members who are listed as Missing in Action (MIA) or Prisoners of War (POW) may also apply.
